Vermont is a state in the New England region of the United States. It borders the states of Massachusetts to the south, New Hampshire to the east, and New York to the west and the Canadian province of Quebec to the north. Vermont is the only state in New England that does not border the Atlantic Ocean. Education in Vermont consists of public, private, and boarding schools in Vermont, including the University of Vermont, private colleges, and secondary and primary schools. The governor appoints the Vermont State Board of Education (VSBE) with approval by the senate. It administers public education in the state. Local municipalities and their respective school districts operate individual public schools, but public schools’ VSBE audits performance. The VSBE also makes recommendations to state leaders concerning education spending and policies.

Vermont’s compulsory attendance statute requires parents or guardians to cause their children between the ages of 6 and 16 to attend a public, private, boarding school, or a home study school program. Public, independent, and boarding schools are commonly but not exclusively divided into three primary and secondary education tiers: elementary school, middle school or junior high school, and high school. Complex governance structures often organize schools.

Vermont requires high school boarding school students to meet minimum criteria to complete high school and earn a diploma. The goal of the Vermont Board of Education is to ensure that graduates from any high school in the state are prepared to function competitively in the world. Graduation from a high school boarding school is a momentous occasion for students, and it is the starting point for future career success.

Vermont requires boarding school students to complete 20 Carnegie units to graduate high school boarding school. The Carnegie unit is a measure of the number of times students spend on a particular subject. The measurement is not used in higher education and represents the amount of time high school boarding school students contact the subject and teacher.

The 20 Carnegie units must include specific academic courses to graduate high school in Vermont. Students must complete four years of English courses, one year of art, one and a half years of physical education, three years of science, three years of history and social science courses, geography, economics, and government courses. Boarding school students must also complete three years of mathematics, including basic mathematics, algebra I and II, statistics, geometry, pre-calculus, and calculus courses.

A coed boarding and ski academy for grades 8-12, this school is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. Along with rigorous academics, it also is known for developing a number of world-class skiers who have competed in national and international competitions. Graduates have been accepted into such colleges as Harvard, Dartmouth, and others across the country. To gain admittance, a student must demonstrate a high level of skiing ability.

Green Mountain Valley School

Another school that combines academics and skiing, Green Mountain Valley is located in Waitsfield and offers a coed environment for grades 8-12. Founded in 1973, it has an enrollment of only 110 students, offering a solid amount of personalized instruction. In addition to skiing, the school’s athletic programs also include soccer and lacrosse, while other students choose to focus on the visual arts and theater programs.

Stratton Mountain School

For parents who dream of seeing their child standing on a podium with an Olympic gold medal around their neck, Stratton Mountain School deserves a long look. Having produced 36 Olympic athletes in such events as Alpine skiing, Nordic skiing, Freestyle skiing and Snowboarding, the school has an international reputation within the sports world. Enrollment is limited to 120-125 students, giving the school a student-teacher ratio of only 4:1.

Located on 500 acres in Putney, this school was founded in 1935 and has 250 students on its campus. Coed for grades 9-12, it has a 5:1 student-teacher ratio, one of the lowest among boarding schools in the state. Placing an academic emphasis on liberal arts, the school also teaches students about community service and environmental sustainability. To do so, all students are required to spend time working on and maintaining Elm Lea Farm, the working dairy farm located on campus.
