Indiana is a U.S. state in the Midwestern United States. It is the 38th-largest by area and the 17th-most populous of the 50 United States. Its capital and largest city is Indianapolis. Indiana was admitted to the United States as the 19th state on December 11, 1816. It is bordered by Lake Michigan to the northwest, Michigan to the north, Ohio to the east, the Ohio River and Kentucky to the south and southeast, and the Wabash River and Illinois to the west.

Indiana State Board of Education approved the adoption of new English, Language Arts, and Mathematics standards. These new standards result from a process designed to identify, evaluate, synthesize, and create high-quality, rigorous standards for Indiana students. Students will be validated as college and career ready by the Indiana Education Roundtable, the Indiana Commission for Higher Education, the Indiana Department of Education, the Indiana State Board of Education, and the Indiana Center for Education and Career Innovation. Boarding school students who successfully master these objectives by the time they graduate from high school will be ready to go directly into the workplace or a postsecondary educational opportunity without the need for remediation.

Indiana’s performance-based accreditation system (IC 20-21-4.1) applies to all public schools, including charter schools and any boarding school that voluntarily seeks and is granted state accreditation under the performance-based approach. A boarding school shall be accredited under the performance-based system if the school meets legal standards, as determined by the Indiana State Board of Education. The Indiana State Board of Education is charged with adopting rules to establish and implement the performance-based accreditation system. This process is in its initial stages of development.

Indiana’s Core 40 is the academic foundation all public, private, and boarding students need to succeed in college, apprenticeship programs, military training, and the workforce. The completion of Core 40 is an Indiana graduation requirement. Indiana’s Core 40 curriculum provides the academic foundation all students need to succeed in college and the workforce. Core 40 became Indiana’s required high school curriculum in fall 2007. Students entering high school since 2007 have been expected to complete Core 40 as a graduation requirement. By providing all Indiana boarding school students a balanced sequence of academically rigorous high school courses in the core subjects of English/language arts, mathematics, science and social studies; physical education/health and wellness; and electives including world languages, career/technical, and fine arts, the Core 40 requirement allows all our students to compete with the best. That’s great news for students attending Indiana boarding schools.

Both are located in the northern area of the state with Culver Academies in Marshall County and La Lumiere in Laporte County.

Culver Academies is a nonsectarian school that is home to over eight hundred students from many areas of the world, in grades nine through twelve. Tuition at Culver starts at $44,500. There are also added expenses of uniforms, books, and extracurricular activities. Culver offers financial aid to those who may need it and many scholarships are available for students meeting certain criteria. The school recommends submitting an enrollment application by September the year before a student plans to attend, as enrollment fills up fairly quickly. Prospective students must take the Secondary Schools Admission Test, or the SAT, before they can be officially accepted. Culver Academies has a number of athletic and academic opportunities that cover a wide variety of interests. The school also offers summer camps for those from ages seven to seventeen at Lake Maxinkukee, which is in Culver. The camps offer activities to build confidence, leadership skills, as well as educational activities.

La Lumiere School’s website lists an admission application deadline of January for the following school year. Tuition at this Roman Catholic school starts at $42,230. La Lumiere has a limited number of financial aid and scholarship options available per school year. Applicants are also required to take the SSAT before the application process is complete. La Lumiere is home to two hundred coed students from all over, in grades nine through twelve. These students have the opportunity to explore a number of athletics as well as many academic areas. La Lumiere also provides many summer courses for students who have already attended regular classes. Indiana, itself, is home to many beautiful and educational experiences. The weather is diverse as it is in many Midwestern states, where winter often brings snow and nearly freezing temperatures while summer can bring extreme heat. It truly is a beautiful, full of nature place to live.
