Avon Old Farms School (Connecticut)
Avon Old Farms School is a prep and boarding school that was founded in 1927 by Theodate Pope Riddle. Although a woman, Riddle had intended to create the first prep and boarding school for boys. Avon is located in Avon, Connecticut on farmland. It originally began with 48 students who went there to prepare for college. Today over 300 students,from 14 to 18 years of age, attend. Avon also has a very aggressive athletic program, arts program, in addition to teaching the usual courses needed to prepare students for college, including English, Math, foreign languages.
The athletic program includes, basketball, hockey, baseball, swimming, tennis and more. Avon Old Farms is committed to getting boys ready to face the challenges of the world when they become men.
During World War II, the school temporary closed its doors as a boarding school and became a place for housing blind Army veterans. With support of parents, faculty, and board members, the school reopened as a prep school for boys in 1948.
Today,Kenneth H. LaRocque, who was with the school since 1998, is continuing the single sexed tradition of getting boys ready to face the challenges of college.
