Connecticut is the southernmost state in the New England region of the United States. As of the 2010 Census, it has the highest per-capita income, the second-highest level of human development behind Massachusetts, and the highest median household income in the United States. It is bordered by Rhode Island to the east, Massachusetts to the north, New York to the west, and the Long Island Sound to the south. Its capital is Hartford and its most populous city is Bridgeport. Historically the state is part of New England as well as the tri-state area with New York and New Jersey, which together make up metropolitan New York City. The state is named for the Connecticut River which approximately bisects the state.

The Connecticut State Department of Education promises an excellent education to equip every child, regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, family wealth, zip code, or disability status, with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in college, careers, and civic life. The state provides guidance and leadership to school districts to support public, private, and boarding schools where great teachers and leaders hold high expectations for all Connecticut students.

The Connecticut State Department of Education supports its school districts with a rigorous and relevant curriculum, prekindergarten through 12th grade. Curricular development takes place at the district level through meaningful, ongoing, data-informed discussions involving districtwide educators.

Connecticut state provides resources to include frameworks with standards and grade-level expectations, templates for curriculum, and sample lessons and assessments. State-provided professional development, supplementary resources, and Bureau of Teaching and Learning staff are also available to assist.

The Connecticut Core Standards, adopted by the State Board of Education in 2010, provide teachers, students, and families with clear expectations of what a boarding school student should know and do at each grade level. The standards focus on English Language Arts, Mathematics, and literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, & Technical Subjects in Grades 6-12. School districts develop local curricula based on these college and career standards. Taken together, standards, high-quality curriculum, and instruction prepare boarding school students to meet the demands of 21st Century study, work, and life.

To graduate from a high school boarding school, Connecticut recommends that high school boarding school students earn 25 credits. Among these credit requirements are English, Math, Science, Social Studies, World Language, Physical Education, Art, and core electives.

The Waterford Country School Therapeutic Boarding Program located in rural Connecticut serves boys ages 11-17, from around the nation. Waterford helps boys who are experiencing social, emotional, behavioral issues, or learning impediments and disorders like Attention Deficit and ADHD. Waterford is a nonprofit agency that has been serving children and families since 1922. Waterford’s therapeutic program believes all children want to succeed. If they are not successful in the classroom or at home, Waterford wants to help.

Canterbury School

Located in New Milford, Canterbury School is owned by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Hartford. Coed for grades 9-12, it has an enrollment of 350 students and is known for having a low student-teacher ratio, with it currently being 6:1. Along with individualized classroom instruction, the school is viewed as having perhaps the most beautiful campus of any school in the state.

Housed in Wallingford, Choate Rosemary Hall is coed for grades 9-12 and is one of the state’s larger boarding schools, currently having an enrollment of 850 students. However, despite its large enrollment, the school still maintains very high academic standards. Many of its students have won awards at state and national competitions in Science, Math, and Economics, with one of its teams winning the 2012 American Mathematics Competition.

Forman School

Focused on working with children who have learning disabilities such as dyslexia, Forman School is coed for grades 9-12 and resides in Litchfield. With a goal of helping special needs students be able to enter college, the school has gained a reputation for success in this area. Set up much like a regular high school, students take classes in math, science, language arts, social studies, and other important academic areas.

An all-girls school for grades 9-12, this school in Farmington has been named the top boarding school for girls in the United States by leading educational publications. With an enrollment of 300, the school is known for helping its students excel in many areas of academics. With an endowment of over $100 million and the support of celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey, it is a school that many parents take a long look at when making their decision.
