New Jersey is a state in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern regions of the United States. It is bordered on the north and east by the state of New York; on the east, southeast, and south by the Atlantic Ocean; on the west by the Delaware River and Pennsylvania; and on the southwest by Delaware Bay and the state of Delaware. New Jersey is the fourth-smallest state by area but the 11th-most populous, with 9,288,994 residents as of 2020 and an area of 8,722.58 square miles (22,591.4 km2), making it the most densely populated of the 50 U.S. states. New Jersey’s state capital is Trenton, while the state’s most populous city is Newark. All but one county in New Jersey (Warren County) lie within the combined statistical areas of New York City or Philadelphia; consequently, the state’s largest metropolitan area falls within Greater New York.

Education in New Jersey (NJ), USA

Education in New Jersey is governed by the Legislature, the New Jersey State Board of Education, and the Commissioner of Education. New Jersey’s schools must be in session for at least 180 days. School attendance is compulsory between the ages of 6 and 16; however, a child who will be five years old during the current school year may attend kindergarten based on a cut-off date established by local education boards. 

Most high school boarding schools offer general, college preparatory, and business courses. Vocational programs at some high school boarding schools and all 21 county vocational schools provide specialized instruction designed to prepare students for careers after they graduate. 

All students must meet the state’s academic standards as described in the Core Curriculum Content Standards. The standards are statements of expectation of what all boarding school students should know and do by graduating from high school boarding school. State regulations geared to the standards contain minimum high school graduation requirements, which prescribe specific credit hours to be completed in the following areas: language arts literacy, science, math, social studies, comprehensive health and physical education, and visual, performing, or practical arts. Career exploration is woven into the curriculum, and local districts can add elective courses. Three state tests measure student progress in meeting the Core Curriculum Content Standards: The Elementary School Proficiency Assessment (ESPA), the Grade Eight Proficiency Assessment (GEPA), and the High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA). Students must pass all sections of the HSPA to receive a state-endorsed diploma.

Students who cannot meet the testing requirement may be eligible for a Special Review Assessment (SRA). This allows for examples of student work to be considered in place of an exam to determine whether a student has met a high school boarding school’s academic requirements diploma.

New Jersey, also known as the Garden State, is home to four private boarding schools registered with The Association of Boarding Schools. New Jersey has built one of the strongest public, private, and boarding school education systems in the country. Blair Academy offers an excellent college preparatory curriculum to students in grades 9 – 12. The school’s academic emphasis is on student-teacher partnerships, small classes, advanced placement/specialized programs and global perspectives.  Set in rural Blairstown, the Academy is home to a baseball team that won its fourth consecutive Prep A championship this year. Students can engage outside the classroom through an array of student-run organizations covering a wide range of interests, from international issues to math to the environment, and more. Depending on the desired grade level, U.S. applicants must provide SSAT, ISEE, PSAT or SAT test results, while international students are required to provide SSAT and TOEFL scores. Financial aid is available, but applications must be completed online no later than January 15.

Peddie School’s picturesque campus borders Peddie Lake, eight miles from Princeton and fifty miles from both New York City and Philadelphia. Serving students in grades 9 – 12, Peddie has earned a reputation for academic rigor, a friendly culture and focus on the entire student – mind, body and spirit. Peddie prides itself on its wireless technology and discovery-based science programs – including courses in forensics, DNA, neurobiology, robotics, physiology, evolution, genetics, quantitative chemical analysis, and organic chemistry – and an expanding Chinese language curriculum. Students applying for admission in grades 9 – 12 must have completed the PSAT, SSAT or SAT. (Please note: SSAT scores are mandatory for students applying for grades 9 – 10.) Citing a commitment to a diverse student body, Peddie offers over $6 million in financial aid and is currently giving financial support to 40% of the school’s students.

The Hun School of Princeton’s 45-acre campus is located between New York City and Philadelphia, less than two miles from downtown Princeton and Princeton University. Offering a “rich and challenging student-centered” education to students in grades 6 – 12, the school stresses the development of character, community and values. Outside the classroom, Hun boasts an excellent hockey team – two players were drafted to the pros this year – as well as programs in cross country, tennis, lacrosse and soccer. Student organizations offer extra-curricular activities in electronics, the arts, debate and sports. All candidates for secondary school admission must provide scores for the SSAT, and international applicants must provide score for the TOEFL. Scores for PSAT, SAT and ACT may be submitted for applicants for grades 11 or 12. Families can apply for financial support regardless of resources, once the student has been admitted.

Founded in 1838, The Pennington School serves students in grades 6 – 12 on a 54-acre campus ten miles from Princeton, NJ. The school’s strong academic program and 360-degree approach to personal and academic growth produce noteworthy results. For example, Pennington students taking the Advanced Microbiology Course recently discovered two previously unknown viruses! The school’s athletic teams have garnered a number of championships. Sports include cheerleading, soccer, golf, football, field hockey, tennis, cross country and water polo. A long list of clubs and organizations provides extra-curricular activities for almost any interest. Middle-school applicants must provide SSAT scores, upper-school applicants (grades 10 – 11) can use SSAT, PSAT or SAT scores. Financial aid is awarded on the basis of financial estimations for the coming year, tax returns and Financial Aid Committee guidelines.
