Missouri is a state in the Midwestern region of the United States. With more than six million residents, it is the 19th-most populous state of the country. The largest urban areas are St. Louis, Kansas City, Springfield, and Columbia; the capital is Jefferson City. The state is the 21st-most extensive area. Missouri is bordered by eight states (tied for the most with Tennessee): Iowa to the north, Illinois, Kentucky, and Tennessee (via the Mississippi River) to the east, Arkansas to the south, and Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska to the west. In the south are the Ozarks, a forested highland, providing timber, minerals, and recreation. The Missouri River, after which the state is named, flows through the center of the state into the Mississippi River, which makes up Missouri’s eastern border.

Education in Missouri (MO), USA

Education is compulsory from ages seven to sixteen in Missouri, commonly but not exclusively divided into primary and secondary education: elementary school, middle school, junior high school, and high school. Most boarding school programs include kindergarten to 12th grade. District territories are often complex in structure. In some cases, elementary, middle, and junior high schools of a single district feed into high schools in another district.

The Missouri Learning Standards define the knowledge and skills boarding school students need in each grade level and course for college success, other post-secondary training, and careers. These expectations are aligned to the Show-Me Standards, which define what all Missouri high school boarding school students should know and be able to do.

The latest expectations aligned with the Show-Me Standards are called the Missouri Learning Standards. The Missouri Learning Standards help ensure boarding school students learn basic and higher-order skills, including problem-solving and critical thinking. The standards are relevant to the real world and reflect students’ knowledge and skills to achieve their goals. Learning outcomes improve when students, parents, and teachers work together toward shared goals. The Missouri Learning Standards give school administrators, teachers, parents, and students a road map for learning expectations in each grade and course. The Missouri Learning Standards do not dictate the curriculum. Local districts and boarding schools make their own decisions about curriculum, instructional strategies, materials, and textbooks.

Most Missouri boarding schools provide instruction in English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies to one or more grade levels that include at least one grade from kindergarten through twelfth grade. The boarding school has a physical location, and students are instructed on site. The school must be a nonprofit but not a school district, a neglected/delinquent institution, or a charter school as defined by Missouri law.

Missouri state minimum high school boarding school graduation requirements comprise 24 credits earned before graduation. The requirements are stated in terms of the number of unit credits earned in each of several subject areas. To earn one unit of credit, a student must meet all the course requirements and earn a passing grade.

Chaminade College Prep School is an all-male prep school in St. Louis. It is a private, Catholic school and tuition is around $35,000 a year. There are 87 teachers for 789 students. The school is located in the large Midwestern city of St. Louis, so students are close to the many museums, sports facilities, etc. of the greater metropolitan area. It is dedicated to preparing young men for success in college and life.

It is located in a rural area of Missouri and has 17 teachers for 209 students.  Its rural setting gives students an opportunity to do many outdoor activities. The school provides a Christian-centered, faith-based education for its students.

Thomas Jefferson is a coed prep school for grades seven through 12 in St. Louis. It is not affiliated with any specific religion and has a student-to-teacher ratio of 5.87. In 2011, 100% of its graduating senior class matriculated to a four-year college. Students have a 150 day school year and spend nine hours a day in class. It offers a classic liberal arts education to its students designed to teach them how to think and express themselves well.
